The Company was born out of a personal tragedy suffered by Founder and President Mark Hughes. Mark's mother, an aspiring actress, became addicted to prescription diet pills in her quest to lose weight and died of an accidental overdose at the age of 37. Although Mark was only 18,he resolved to find a way to help people control their weight safely and effectively through good nutrition. After substantial research and development, Mark launched The Company in 1980. Sales the first month were $23000. Then, astoundingly, by the end of the first year sales skyrocketed to $2 million. In 1996 retail sales exceeded $1 billion. The Company, with its headquarters located in Los Angeles, U.S.A., currently operates in 44 countries. The Company's Independent Distributors worldover are not employees, and each enjoys the freedom that comes with running one's own business. A "Medical Advisory Board" headed by Dr David Katzin and 9 respected professionals and experts in the field of medicine was created to help ensure that the products meet and exceed the highest standards in the nutrition industry.
